An Old Fashioned Good Time at Barley Creek Distillery

Let’s be honest—some things just don’t need reinventing. The wheel. Pizza. And the Old Fashioned. But here at Barley Creek Distillery, we’re not in the business of leaving well enough alone. We’re in the business of making the Best Old Fashioned you didn’t know you needed—times five.

On April 29th, we’re inviting you to join us in the Pocono Mountains for a spirit tasting that’s equal parts history lesson, flavor adventure, and really good excuse to sip some award winning spirits.

Wait… What Is an Old Fashioned, Anyway?

The Old Fashioned is basically the cocktail world’s version of “keep it simple, stupid.” It dates all the way back to the early 1800s—before mixologists had 14 squeeze bottles and a smoke gun.

Originally? Whiskey. Sugar. Bitters. Maybe a citrus peel if you were feeling fancy.

That’s it.

In fact, the name “Old Fashioned” came from people asking for their drink made the old-fashioned way—before bartenders started getting creative (or, depending who you ask, carried away).

Fast forward a couple centuries, and it’s still one of the most iconic cocktails on the planet—and a perfect showcase for great local whiskey and local spirits.

Our Take: Five Old Fashioneds, Zero Boring Ones

For this tasting, we took that classic formula and gave it the full Barley Creek Distillery treatment—bold flavors, a little creativity, and a lot of personality.

Here’s what you’ll be sipping & noshing on:

Banana Velvet (Rum)

Our Banana Chocolate Rum gets the spotlight here—paired with peanut butter & bacon “Elvis” sliders.Yes, Elvis would absolutely approve. And probably order two.

Tropical Old Fashioned (Agave + Coconut Rum)

A beach vacation… but in a glass.Coconut shrimp with lime crema seals the deal. Flip-flops optional.

Maple Ember (Whiskey)

This is where our local whiskey shines. Barley Creek Rye meets maple, smoke, and bacon-wrapped dates with apple-maple glaze. If this doesn’t qualify as the Best Old Fashioned contender, we don’t know what does.

Jalapeño Bloom (Gin)

A little heat, a lot of flavor. Our botanical gin brings the backbone while jalapeño firecrackers with tajín ranch bring the party.Mild panic, followed by immediate happiness.

Vanilla Noir (Vodka)

Smooth, slightly sweet, and dangerously easy to sip. Paired with mini baked bries topped with almond & cherry compote. Dessert? Cocktail? Both. We’re not here to judge.

Why This Tasting Hits Different

There are plenty of places to grab a drink in the Poconos—but not many that let you explore a full lineup of award winning spirits crafted right here at a true Poconos distillery.

At Barley Creek Distillery, we take pride in being a Pocono Mountains distillery that does things a little differently:

  • We distill our own spirits

  • We experiment (responsibly… most of the time)

  • And we pair flavors in ways that might raise eyebrows—but definitely raise glasses

Join Us April 29th

For $45 per guest (plus tax & gratuity), you’ll get:

  • Five mini Old Fashioneds

  • A tasting of each featured spirit

  • Perfectly paired bites

  • A guided experience led by our team

And yes, you’ll leave with a new appreciation for the Old Fashioned—and probably a new favorite.

Final Thought

The Old Fashioned has been around for over 200 years… but we like to think we’ve given it a pretty good glow-up.

So if you’re searching for the Best Old Fashioned, curious about local spirits, or just looking for a fun night out at a Poconos distillery, this is your sign.

Come thirsty. Leave happy. Possibly texting your friends, “We need to come back.”
